NAVIGATING THE CATEGORIES

The categories above bring together works from across Fell’s career rather than following a strict chronology. Individual works may appear in more than one context — by place, subject or medium — reflecting the continuity of his practice.

The groupings invite comparison and close looking rather than a single pathway through the catalogue.

WAYS OF LOOKING & PERIODS

As the critic William Packer observed, despite the range of subjects in Fell’s work, “the same hand, the same mind, the same eye remain unmistakably at work throughout.”

This continuity can be traced through the three main locations that shaped his practice.

London

Compressed interiors, reflective surfaces and close viewpoints shape works attentive to urban rhythm and proximity. Cafés, stations and streets press figures and architecture together within shared space.

Bungay and East Anglia

Architectural systems and layered interiors underpin a body of work shaped by staircases, windows and adjoining rooms. Domestic life and remembered events are drawn into complex spatial constructions rather than isolated scenes.

Gascony

Measured landscapes, tonal clarity and seasonal change define a concentrated body of late work. Fields, vineyards and wooded slopes recur, alongside interiors and village spaces shaped by routine and return.
